Actor, SEA Games medallist lead 1st Compak clay shooting

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Actor-sports enthusiast Richard Gomez and 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medallist Darius Hizon led national and local shooters during Sunday's First Compak shooting competition held at the Pampanga Clay Shooting Range in Barangay Dela Paz Norte in the city.

The shooting event was a kick-off to a three-day tournament sponsored by the Pampanga Clay Shooting Association, Pampanga's Best, Victoria Court, Sporting Clay Association of the Philippines and Team GomaSport, among others.

Hizon, owner of the shooting range, said the event aims to encourage shotgun shooters of all ages to be involved in clay shooting sport.

He said the 40-hectare shooting range is more than enough to accommodate local and national shooters wishing to hone their skills in preparing for any national or international clay-shooting event such as the SEA Games and Olympics.

Meanwhile, Gomez, president of the National Sporting Clay Association (NSCA), said the event is a series of competitions, which will culminate in a national championship, where the shooter of the year will be chosen.

He said shooters should practice safety, apart from having fun, during the course of the tournament. He also said one of the NSCA's goals is to develop world-class shooters to compete in national and international clay target tournaments to bring more honor and prestige to the country as far as sporting events are concerned.

Gomez also emphasized that the NSCA does not rely on government funding, but is purely a private association under the supervision of the National Sporting Association of America (NSAA).

Taytay, Rizal Mayor Jorick Gacula, chairman of the NSCA, said after three years of getting involved with the sport, he has come to learn that it takes a lot of discipline and hard work to develop one's shooting skills.

"This sport is truly a gentleman's game," he added.
