Arroyo appoints bizman anew for Charter change
By Albert B. Lacanlale

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has recently invited Pampanga businessman Levy P. Laus to be a member of a 15-man Charter Change Advocacy Commission to assist in informing the public on the proposed Charter change.

Laus was among the original 55-man Consultative Commission (Concom) that conducted series of consultations throughout the country to get the people's pulse on the possible changes to the 1987 Constitution.

According to reports, Laus was invited by the President, along with 10 other commissioners of Concom to represent the business sector in further educating people on political reforms that Malacañang has been eagerly pushing for.

The new body, created under of Executive Order No. 495 issued on Jan. 23, 2006, was given and eight-month mandate to complete its task. It has been given an initial P5 million to finance its operations.

Laus, a prominent name in local business and an active member of various civic organizations, is not new to government positions.

He had served as one of the directors of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) under the watch of then BCDA president and Chief Executive Officer Rufo Colayco.

In the Concom, Laus had been given the chairmanship on the study group for the Constitutional provisions on economy and national patrimony.

Among the changes proposed by the Concom with regard to national economy is the liberalization of company ownership in the country, including businesses that have to do with education and mass media.
