By Reynaldo G. Navales

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- About 100 school children in this city completed training on fire safety Friday and are ready to be deployed as kiddie and junior fire marshals, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) announced.

The commissioning of the students as fire officers coincided with the formal launching of the Kiddie and Junior Fire Marshall program of the
BFP at the Bren Z. Guiao Sports Complex in this city Friday morning.

Of the 100 junior fire marshalls, 60 were selected from the San Fernando Central Elementary School while the other 40 were picked from the Pampanga High School.

Secretary Angelo Reyes of the Department of Interior and Local
Government (DILG) said the launching of the program is a major milestone in the effort of the BFP and the local government.

"We have to develop a culture of prevention and safety among the youth," Reyes said.

In cooperation with the BFP, the Department of Education (DepEd) has developed teaching modules regarding fire safety.

Reyes said subjects about fire prevention will be incorporated in the elementary and high school curricula.

"The junior fire marshal program was initially launched in Quezon City in January last year and Pampanga was the second pilot area for the project," Reyes added.

Senior Superintendent Maria Luisa Hadjula, Pampanga fire marshal, said the project aims to educate the children about the importance of fire safety and prevention.

During her speech, DepEd Central Luzon regional director Dinah F. Mindo urged school officials and students to work for the realization and success of the program.

During the program, Reyes distributed the teaching modules and learning materials to local and school officials in the province.
