Editorial: Communication By Malu T. Gueco
LOOKING at the context from a different perspective, we meet the working world reality. We inhale, exhale and literally breathe eight hours of oxygen in this environment.
What an amazing art!
This mode of transferring meaning to the external environ. Swirling in the orbit of ideas, images and icons. Encircling this world are the gemstones of words, actions and stances. An endless array of messages sparkling within our selves, to our family, community and, finally, spreading out to the whole universe.
Going to our life schedule, we thrive on 24 hours of transmitting meaning and/or communiqué to our inner being (intrapersonal), to another person (interpersonal) and to the public (one-to-many).
What are the prime elements comprising the basic lines of communication?
Vamos! Come; let us answer this question by listing down the three elements involved in the field of effective communication.
Prima materials
1. People
Senders are persons who give out information and the receivers are the ones who take in messages. These roles are constantly evolving, thence, in our milieu; we may be a sender in one moment and switch to a receiver in the next minute. How this roller coaster movement gives flavor, gist and meaning to our everyday rhythm.
2. Message
Words or non-verbal expressions play overwhelming parts in sending a communication. Verbal expression and/or written phrases in contrast to gestures and body language animate our wonderland of communication.
Letters, literature, journalism and drama are but a facet of the golden diamond of connections. This can be distinguished from the working language, which can be found in memos, business letters, e-mails, flyers, ads, and brochures.
3. Context
The setting or the circumstances wherein we launch our message can expand the energies of our communication. For example, we have the private context in contrast to the public state to which we hurl our words.
In our private realm, we shower our family, pals and friends with loving messages, which take this following shape.
I love you... You are all I live for... You give me meaning... I adore you... On a non-verbal formulae, we blow kisses, touch and embrace the people we are intimate with.
Looking at the context from a different perspective, we meet the working world reality. We inhale, exhale and literally breathe eight hours of oxygen in this environment. Our written communications are speedily transmitted to our clients, buyers and or allies. Concomitantly, we interface with peers, fellow employees, supervisors, bosses and management people. From every corner, we learn how to build a power bridge linking us with our associates.
Example
Herein below are several lines, which underscore dynamic written dialogue. This presents an e-mail sent to a client from a travel executive.
"If you do not like romance and relaxation, stop reading this." (What an attention-getting introductory sentence!)
"But if you need to free yourself from the hassles of it all, you can take a vacation at our farm resort in Palawan." (This highlights the need of your prospective client.)
"Take advantage of this discounted offer starting February. A three-day sojourn will cost only P3,000 for three persons but only if you avail of this package on or before March 15." (Satisfaction for the client is assured because of the low price. Also the prospect is urged to take action by buying the plan now.)
Outlining the above said communication, has opened our eyes to the great, majestic and enhancing impact we offer in our written correspondence.
Message
Today, you and I have a choice. Instead of passivity, mediocrity and ineptness, let us climb the highest strata of effective communication. Let your good choice of words, nobility of letters and inspiring deeds reach your public who yearns for your magnanimity.
Have a meaningful Sunday with your loved ones.
