Chess wiz Torre urges unity among Pinoys By Albert B. Lacanlale
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Asia's first chess grandmaster Friday called for unity among Filipinos amid a tense atmosphere in the country Friday.
Eugene Torre, a Filipino chess master, aired his appeal during the opening ceremonies for the Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez Chess Cup at the Robinson's Starmills Friday.
Torre said like the board game where all the pieces need to be in harmony to defeat an opponent, the Filipinos should be united to achieve the development that the country needs.
He urged the participants in the chess tournament to practice camaraderie and sportsmanship as guiding principles in life.
"Like chess, we should always make the right move, we should avoid illegal moves," Torre added. By illegal moves, the grandmaster apparently referred to vices that hinder the youth's development.
Councilors Alex F. Patio, Jimmy Lazatin and Reden Halili, and other officials welcomed Torre to the tournament.
Chess enthusiasts from Manila, Bulacan and other parts of the region are taking part in the chess tournament being staged under the auspices of the National Chess Federation and the city government.
The tourney is scheduled to end on Sunday when the awarding of medals and trophies will follow.
