Magalang folks frantic over bridge construction
By Reynaldo G. Navales

MAGALANG -- The long-time dream of the Magaleños, particularly those residing in five northern barangays, will soon become a reality.

This, after the much-awaited construction of Balitucan Bridge was included in the priority project of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo under the Tulay ng Pangulo program.

What’s your opinion on Arroyo’s emergency rule? Post comment.

First District Board Member Tarcicio "Tars" Halili said the people of Magalang, especially those living in Barangays Escaler, Balitucan, Santo Niño, Turu, and Ayala, are very thankful of the project.

With this, Halili said, the Municipal Council recently passed a resolution of thanks to the President for including the bridge on the government's list of priority projects.

Resolution 184, sponsored by Halili, was adopted by the Pampanga Provincial Board (PB) on Sept. 6, 2004 primarily to seek for the immediate construction of the old bridge, which was destroyed by strong water currents.

The resolution recognizes the importance of the bailey bridge to the five villages which are being isolated from the town because of flashfloods during rainy days.

Halili said the people were relieved over the pronouncement of Arroyo that the construction of the bridge will commence soon.

He added the province, as well as the town, have been lobbying for the project since 2004.

"The people of the said barangays suffered so much for the past several years and I personally experienced this in 2004 when Balitucan and Escaler were isolated from the town due to continuous heavy rains then," Halili said.

According to him, he had to pass by waist-deep water in Barangay Santo Nino just to bring relief goods to the flood-affected villages.
