Angeles City table netters prepare for Palarong Pambansa By Dante M. Fabian
ANGELES CITY -- After winning the regional sports event here, the Angeles City table tennis girl's team are now undergoing rigorous training as they prepare for the 2006 Palarong Pambansa.
Chinie Angeles and Maricris Ayson, together with the lawn tennis girls' team and two taekwondo players, are aiming to sneak for gold medals in the "Palarong Pambansa" which will be held in Naga City on April 6 to 14.
The two "promising" table tennis players of Angeles City recently bagged championship of the girl's doubles event in the prestigious Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) held last April 1 - 7 here. Last year, Angeles and Ayson lost to Bulacan in the finals in the deciding match with a 3 -2 score.
Coach Domingo Sangalang said despite the lack of funds for allowance and incentives and the lack of water in the classrooms where the athletes are billeted, the team managed to win because of their determination.
Angeles and Ayson, who will represent Region III in the Palarong Pambansa this year, have also won the Milo Little Olympics in Pangasinan last year. The Milo committee chose Angeles as the Most Outstanding Athlete in table tennis. She also received the "Athlete of the Year" award for HAU high school batch 2006 and was awarded during their graduation on April 7.
On the other hand, Zambales won the boy's doubles against defending champion Nueva Ecija while Bulacan won the mixed doubles against Angeles City in a nerve- wracking rally in the final set (3-2).
Meanwhile, Nikkie Manalo and Malou Lucero won the girls doubles in lawn tennis beating team Olongapo. Manalo have been dominating the event in the CLRAA and even the Palarong Pambansa.
In other events, the Pampanga boy's team dominated the volleyball event after defeating Angeles City in the finals in straight sets.
