San Fernando mulls record for long 'longaniza'
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- At least five meat processing companies have signed up their support as this city guns to break a local record for the longest line of longganiza (native pork sausage).
Councilor Nelson Lingat, chairman of Fiesta Committee 2006, said the province's top meat processing firms have pledged to donate tons of longganiza in an attempt to set a new record for the city.
Lingat said companies under the Pampanga Meat Processors (Pampro) have unanimously vowed to support the attempt, which aims to promote the province's meat processing industry.
Companies like Pampanga's Best, Mekeni Meat Product, Roel's Food Corporation, Mother Earth, Nan Meat, Ariel's and Tita's Special, among others will be churning processed meat to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records attempt.
The line of longaniza will start at the Monumento Fernandino, all the way to Capitol Boulevard.
The existing longest line of sausages listed in the Guinness Book of World Records was made in Sheffield, South York, United Kingdom on Oct. 27, 2000, stretching up to 59.14 kilometers.
However, Lingat explained that although the city's attempt will be a far cry compared to the existing record, it might still make it to Guinness since the product that would be used is different.
Nevertheless, Lingat said, with or without Guinness, the city would still push through with the activity to add up to the "excitement" of the fiesta celebration.
The record attempt will be held on May 29, he said. (ABL)
