Water firm to replace asbestos distribution lines By Reynaldo G. Navales
MABALACAT -- The Mabalacat Water District (MWD) is set to substitute the old asbestos cement pipes (ACPs) which are still serving as water distribution lines in at least three villages here.
Francis Dimaliwat, MWD general manager, said the project is in line with the water district's rehabilitation program. He said the ACP pipelines will be replaced with new polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes.
The water district would spend more than P4 million for the PVC pipes, which will be installed in villages including San Joacquin, Poblacion and San Francisco.
Dimaliwat admitted that the rehabilitation of the old lines was delayed but he disclosed that water district management has been implementing various programs to ensure the safety of its consumers.
A group of residents in Barangay San Francisco earlier filed a position paper urging the MWD officials to replace the asbestos lines in the village. They feared that the asbestos component of the old distribution lines might cause asbesosis and other ailments to water consumers.
Asbestosis is achronic and progressive lung disease caused by prolonged inhalation of asbestos particles.
