Sto. Tomas pupils on Read-A-Thon By Raymond C. Garcia
STO. TOMAS -- The reading skills of grade school students here are now placed under the "Every Child A Reader" Program's (Ecarp) Read-A-Thon Project designed to develop a culture of reading among the young.
In support to the launching of the program implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd), Mayor Lucas Arceo presided over the reading session for grade three students in San Vicente Elementary School, this town.
The Ecarp National Read-A-Thon Project is administered in all public elementary schools by the DepEd's Bureau of Elementary Education (BEE) in cooperation with International Scholastic Inc.
Rafaelita B. Pallasigui, Division of Pampanga elementary supervisor for English, said that the usage of the well-balanced reading program will further enhance reading proficiency.
Through the principle of "learning through reading" and "reading to learning," the pupils experience the different stages of reading which include the development phase, functional state and reading for enjoyment, reinforcement/ enrichment level, Pallasiqui said.
She added that as children gain in reading proficiency, they acquire word recognition/ vocabulary skill, comprehension skill, study skill and literary appreciation skill. The project is designed to encourage all children in grades I-VI to read at least three books a year through the conduct of the nationwide reading marathon; generate public awareness and support to the DepEd's Ecarp; develop love for reading among elementary pupils and foster a culture of reading in all schools and communities.
In connection with the launching activity, all central and field personnel including the teachers and pupils shall for 30 minutes drop everything to read any material.
