3M passengers a year for DMIA within reach: airport management By Dante M. Fabian
* Clark corporation head says Luciano responsible for most of the significant growth in Diosdad Macapagal airport
CLARK ECOZONE -- Clark Development Corporation (CDC) president and chief executive officer (CEO) Antonio R. Ng announced Monday the appointment of Jose Victor Luciano to take over the top executive post of Clark International Airport Corporation (Ciac).
Ng announced during the flag ceremony here on Monday that Luciano had been assigned to replace former Ciac president Danilo Augusto Francia who was transferred to the Mactan International Airport (MIA) in Cebu.
Ng also said Luciano, CDC executive vice president and chief operating officer, is responsible for most of the significant growth in activities at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), including the increase in airline and passenger movements that enhanced the rise in the annual income of the airport corporation from the other airport related-activities.
Luciano, for his part, expressed optimism that the three million passengers per year will easily be attainable at the DMIA in a few years, because of the expected increase of flights to be initiated by low-cost carriers before the end of the year and early next year.
DMIA officials said the airport, at present, can only accommodate 1.5 million passengers annually with its existing airport terminal.
The Ciac board of directors recently approved funding of P266 million for the expansion of the existing terminal and construction of other infrastructure projects to improve airport facilities to cope with the influx of flights and passenger arrivals in the coming months.
The groundbreaking for the various infrastructure projects, including the terminal expansion at the DMIA, will be held on the birth anniversary of former President Diosdado Macapagal on September 28, where the new Ciac president is expected to announce the entry of new airlines to operate in Clark.
