Market sweeper returns P40T to owner
By Joel P. Mapiles

CANDABA -- For his honesty and dedication to public service, a market cleaner who returned to its rightful owner a huge amount of money he found while working, was lauded and given due recognition by local officials here.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

This holds true as Mayor Jerry Pelayo and the Municipal Council jointly recognized the good deed of Reymundo Santos, 45, who has been working for almost 15 years as market sweeper.

Santos, even though burdened by monetary problems due to his son’s hospitalization and the schooling of his other children, still returned the money to its owner.

Santos recounted that prior to finding the money, he woke up around 4 a.m. and started cleaning the market premises.

After two hours, he found a small plastic bag containing the money and some documents.

Santos said he kept the bag -- not because he has the intention to pocket the money -- but to secure and find the real owner.

Santos said when he found the money, he felt pity for the owner so he waited for almost an hour in the area where he found the money and wait for the owner to show up.

His long wait bore fruit when Zenaida Suba, the owner, asked his help to find the lost plastic bag. It was then that he turned over the bag to Suba.

Santos said he cannot describe his feelings that time because in his own little way, he extended help, particularly to the family of the deceased.

The Municipal Council stated in its resolution that the noble and selfless act of Santos exemplifies the ideal Candabeño trait of honesty, decency and righteousness, which every citizen should possess.

Hence, the council noted that it is deemed fit and proper to commend Santos for such an exemplary deed for setting as an example of being an ideal Candabeño and a good citizen worthy of praise and emulation.

Pelayo, on the other hand, said the municipal employee deserves to be honored and make his deed an inspiration to every public servant.
