Editorial: A peaceful solution to a peaceful end

THE hostage drama at the Western Union branch in Dau, Mabalacat which had everyone glued to their seats last Saturday ended peacefully, although most people (uzis or usiseros, to be exact) wished for the incident to have taken a different turn.

Oh well, so much for wishful thinking.

But then again, those who were responsible for the peaceful negotiations with the hostage-takers cum rob suspects deserve commendation. Bloodshed was prevented, and no one was hurt.

And we’ve come across a tidbit which we are sure would interest you, dear readers. We heard that after the negotiations, when the suspects were being arrested by the police, the staff of the Western Union branch asked the authorities to “go easy” with their captors.

It seems that the hostage-takers were quite “polite” with their hostages. Interesting, don’t you think?

It’s possible that under the circumstances, when everyone felt the pressure during the hostage-taking incident, the suspects chose to be amiable with the victims.

After all, they were quite in a position at the time, if you catch our drift. They probably thought that since they were about to surrender, there would be no sense to be gruff to the hostages and hurt them.

It was just as well. Violence, whichever way you look at it, is ugly.
