Editorial: Honesty is still the best policy

MAYBE humankind is not yet hopeless, after all. There are still those who do not think of themselves. There are still people who act selflessly. And there are still those who think of the consequences of their actions.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

Such is Reymundo Santos, a market sweeper from Candaba town. Although very much in need of money, he did not think twice to keep the money he found – all of P40,000 – to its rightful owner.

His financial problems did not hinder him from doing the right – and honest – thing. Even if his son needs medical care, and even if his other kids need monetary assistance with their schooling, Santos did not take the money.

What he felt was pity for the owner. He did not think of the gains of his find. He was thinking: “What if I was the one who lost the money? I would probably go crazy looking for it. And the owner probably needs the money as much as I do.” He was right.

True enough, the people who lost the money needed it to pay for funeral expenses. And they were really grateful to Santos for his kind deed.

And it is this kind deed that led officials of Candaba to recognize him for his honesty and dedication.

Working for almost 15 years as market sweeper, Santos really can be considered a dedicated worker. And his honesty, we know, will lead him towards achieving a level in his life that is only within our grasp.

What he has – his honesty, his truthfulness, his selflessness – is rare nowadays, as we all know.

We should envy him.
