Businessman is new Clark firm prexy By Albert B. Lacanlale
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Business leader Liberato Laus will replace Antonio Ng as Clark Development Corporation (CDC) president and chief executive officer (CEO).
The order appointing Laus to the CDC top post came all the way from Brussels, Belgium where President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is on an official trip.
Ng filed his irrevocable resignation effective September 30, ending his less than a year stint in the former US military base.
The appointment of Laus, president of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (PamCham), was welcomed by businessmen and government leaders in Pampanga.
"Mr. Laus will come in to CDC bringing with him two decades or more of corporate experience. He will come in like a whiff of fresh air," said Edgardo Pamintuan, chairman of the Subic-Clark Area Development Council (SCADC).
"I am sure he (Laus) will help me in fast-tracking major projects of the President and to reduce, if not totally remove, red tape for the benefit of locators and investors and eventually help put up components for the mega logistics hub," Pamintuan said.
Representatives Rey Aquino and Anna York Bondoc-Sagum of the province's third and fourth districts, respectively, are also among those who congratulated Laus on his appointment.
Aquino said Laus's leadership at the CDC is timely, especially when the President has poured in major programs for areas north of Metro Manila.
"Mr. Laus's expertise in business and civic organizations would be a great push for Clark, and eventually to the City of San Fernando, the province and the whole nation," said Aquino, explaining that Clark generates employment and provides income for the National Government.
"I think President Arroyo is expecting much from Clark that is why he chose Mr. Laus to head the ecozone," the lawmaker added.
Rene Romero, chairman of the Advocates for the Development of Central Luzon (ADCL) and vice president of PamCham, said Laus's appointment is "long overdue".
"Under Mr. Laus' watch, Clark will move forward. The business sector, and even politicians, is excited to welcome him in Clark," Romero said.
Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, whose city benefited from the assistance of Laus to community development, said Fernandinos are happy for the incoming CDC president.
"It is a well-deserved appointment," he said.
Alfrito Mah, a director of PamCham, said Laus is not just a successful businessman but also "a dynamic leader who has a deep concern on our country and the well-being of everyone."
"He (Laus) will do great things as CDC president and will definitely be an asset to us Kapampangans," Mah said.
