San Fernando old market rehab begins By Albert B. Lacanlale
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- In time with the celebration of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez's 61st birthday, the City Government here on Tuesday formally opened construction for the wet section of the Old Public Market in Barangay Sto. Rosario.
Rodriguez led the groundbreaking ceremony that would usher in a new and upgraded wet market to replace the dilapidated and unsanitary facility that had for decades served consumers not only of San Fernando but of other towns as well.
The rehabilitation of the Old Public Market (wet section) had been a product of long talks between the city officials and the market vendors.
Initially, the City Hall proposed to replace the market dry goods section with a modern market through a bond flotation scheme, but the vendors turned down the proposal.
Funded by P25 million of the city's P125-million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines, the wet section project will have a total floor plan of 2,030.625 square-meters.
The project of the Rodriguez administration consists of a 33 square-meter waiting area, restrooms equipped with water closets, lavatories and urinals; and almost 300 fixed stalls for fruits and vegetables, chicken, fish, beef and pork vendors. It was recently introduced to Fernandinos through a public launch, held at the City Hall's Atrium.
The activity was facilitated by City Council Secretary Jesse Quiwa.
During the launch, the market committee presented the proposed structure, structural design, floor plan, relocation plan, traffic security and safety within and around the market area.
An open forum was also held in the meeting to address the vendors' concerns and requests. Among the issues that were raised and answered by city officials include unequal space allotment, relocation period, relocation site, right to own a stall in the Old Public Market, and more - which were all answered accordingly.
At present, the vendors have already been relocated by the City Government where they are placed according to section. The market will already be complete and accessible to the residents of San Fernando on December 14.
