Editorial: Gotcha!

THOSE who saw the entrapment operation against Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Otto Macabulos on TV, conducted by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation last Thursday, may have been a bit shocked... but there were also those who sort of expected it to happen.

We learned that many have perceived Macabulos to have been accepting bribe money over the years. But of course, they were only speculations.

But all that changed upon his arrest. The only thing missing was perhaps someone shouting, "Gotcha!" Macabulos handled several controversial cases in the province, among which are the killing of three youths in Mabalacat early this year, a rape case filed against a businessman, and the "missing" narra flitches.

The turnout of these cases, it seems, have been questionable. And his recent arrest only added to the doubts of the constituency on where Macabulos's loyalty really lies.

What this says about the status of the justice system, we're ashamed to say. But you get our drift.

One way or another, we're afraid it may mar the reputation of others in his field. But still, what everyone saw he did on national television is something anyone would not be proud of.

Macabulos, we learned, was able to post a P50,000 bail. He's out, in other words. But the details surrounding his arrest - and his reputation - the people already know.

What prompted him to do it? Only he can answer that. Of course, presumptions abound, what with the controversial cases he is handling and have handled in the past.

The NBI had already filed the cases against him, and there is no more turning back for Macabulos at this time.

This is another of those interesting stories, of which ending many would be waiting for in quiet anticipation.

Would he eventually get out of this mess? Not that we are looking forward to the ending of this story, but what can we say? It's interesting as they come.
