'Magician' is adopted son of Mabalacat
By Reynaldo G. Navales

MABALACAT -- For having contributed to the development of the youth here, the Municipal Council here has declared cue artist Efren "Bata" Reyes as the town's adopted son.

Mayor Marino Morales said Reyes, who hails from nearby Angeles City, had supported billiard competitions in the municipality for many years thereby preventing the youth from using prohibited drugs such as shabu and marijuana and popularized the game in the town.

Morales said Reyes has been a role model for the youth and as such greatly contributed to programs of the Municipal Government in protecting the welfare of the youth and educate them on the use of illegal drugs that is not beneficial to them.

"Morales is a world-class athlete. He is a true-blooded Kapampangan who has not changed with the accolades he received in the world," said Morales.

"Reyes has also shared his talents to his kabalens and is known for his low profile attitude that earned him praise and respect," according to Morales.

More importantly, Reyes has a soft spot for the youth, said the mayor.

Reyes recently bagged the World 8-Ball 2006 competition in Reno, Nevada winning a record US$500,000 or a whopping P25 million. He defeated American Rodney Morris 8-6.

After defeating Morris, Reyes took center stage again in Indonesia emerging as the winner in the Asian billiards circuit.
