Editorial: The Tiger is back

SNIFF the air... election fever has begun. It has started a while back, but topped it all off last Wednesday- what with the tie-up of former San Fernando mayor Eligio "Tiger" Lagman with the city's former mayor, Representative Rey B. Aquino in the 2007 elections.

Bomb after bomb of pronouncements -- unexpected or otherwise -- are being thrown by both camps the past few days.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

It's an interesting battle, the Oca-Rey mayoral fight. What makes it fascinating is the fact that both contenders for the city mayorship are former allies, kumpadres at that, who stood beside each other, clapped each others' backs, amidst past adversities.

Now, they are filing one charge after the other against each other.

And now with Tiger at Congressman Aquino's side, many have observed that they would be formidable -- like before. The renewal of their partnership says much about the state of the local elections in the city come 2007.

Aquino, during a meeting, said it was "against his will" to run alongside Rodriguez in the 2004 elections as he personally knows how Tiger served the Fernandinos during his stint as vice mayor.

Rodriguez may have felt this -- that Aquino's endorsement of him as successor to the mayoralty post was only halfhearted. If he did, he kept it to himself.

After all, who knew that their relationship would be soured a few months after that?

And now with Tiger back, the Rodriguez camp is somehow faced with a dilemma of sorts. Have they been expecting this? If so, what is their counterpart move?

That, we have yet to find out... but rest assured that with the rate this fight is going, it's going to be a surprise.
