Saturday, March 03, 2007 Pampanga police chief orders men to implement 'Five K'
CAMP OLIVAS -- Pampanga policemen have been ordered to merge with the community as an effort to prevent the occurrence of crimes in major places including malls, markets, and other public places.
Implementing the "Five K" (Kapulisan, Kapampangan, Kayagape, Kapayapaan at Kaunlaran), Police Provincial Director Keith Singian said the objective of the program is to lessen crimes and maintain peace and order in highly urbanized areas in the province.
"This is to bring the police closer to the community," said Singian, adding that several "police boxes" -- that will serve as outposts -- are being rushed for completion and will be installed in crime prone areas.
He said police boxes will be manned by three policemen, backed by two traffic aides and a motorcycle-riding cop for speedy response.
Although the Five K has yet to be formally launched, its concept is already implemented in selected areas, said Singian. The so-called police box will also serve as control base and contact point between the police and the public.
Policemen detailed at community boxes will cover a 200-meter radius area.
The initial phase for the implementation of Five K begins in San Fernando City where sensational crimes have been noted in the past weeks. Other areas will follow suit, said Singian.
He said the policemen detailed at the box will be embedded in the community and will maintain close coordination with the barangay officials, non-government organizations, and the business sector.
Aside from the Five K, Singian said checkpoints and other crime prevention activities will remain in effect.
The business sector was surprised by the present set-up of the anti-crime campaign of the Pampanga police and pledged to support the police to make the project a successful one.
"Since Five K has been implemented, crime volume in the province has decreased," said a businessman, noting the 24-hour police visibility and dedication of the police to their service. (MHD)
