MABALACAT -- At least 50 campus publications have joined this year's prestigious search for campus journalism excellence organized by the Pampanga Press Club (PPC), the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (Ched).
PPC president Diosdado Pangilinan said 50 school organs from all over Pampanga would compete for the coveted PPC journalism awards named after three prominent Kapampangan journalists.
Pangilinan said three journalism awards are up for grabs for the best school publications and these are: the Jose Luna Castro Award of Excellence in College Journalism, Renato "Katoks" Tayag Award of Excellence in High School Journalism, and Fyodor "Ody" Fabian Award of Excellence in Elementary Journalism.
Pangilinan said the main objective of the campus journalism award is to inspire campus writers and editors to strive for journalistic excellence. The PPC first held the event in 1990 but it was stopped in 1994 because of the current state of the province, which was devastated by the Mt. Pinatubo eruptions and lahar flows.
The PPC has revived the annual event "to inspire campus writers to hone their craft," said Pangilinan, a Mass Communications graduate at the Angeles University Foundation (AUF).
Senior journalist-members of PPC will compose the board of judges. They will select the winning publications: 60 percent for content, relevance, style and impact and 40 percent for design and layout.
Pangilinan said awarding is slated at 2 p.m. on March 21 at the Communications Center of the San Miguel Corporation Complex, City of San Fernando. (RGN)
