Peña: The Montreal Protocol's 20th anniversary
By Rox Peña
E-ssue

I GOT an email from our Environews Yahoogroup requesting journalists to include information about the e-poster contest on the ozone layer in their columns. The request came for the Elenida Basug, chief of the Environmental Education and Information Division of the Environmental Management Bureau of the DENR.

I made a little research about the e-poster contest and I found out that aside from poster making, there are other contests on the topic mentioned. The activity is part of the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, the international agreement that controls the production and consumption of substances that can cause ozone depletion.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007

Another reason for the contest is the declaration of 2007 as the International Year of the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The event is hosted by the Ozone Secretariat of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Here are the contest details:

Best 20th Anniversary Related Poster -- Five US$500 prizes will be given for what are judged to be the five best 20th Anniversary related poster designs. At least one entry from each of the United Nations' five recognized regions will be honored. Nominations for the Best 20th Anniversary Related Poster contest are due to the Ozone Secretariat by 1 June 2007. Contestants should initially submit their poster layout to OzoneInfo@unep.org. Submissions must be in full color for at least an A3 size poster and be from 150 to 300 DPI. They can be submitted in either JPEG or TIF format. Assistance with FTP upload facility will be provided to those that require it and upon request. Those submissions must also include a signed document authorizing the unconditional reprinting and utilization of the layouts. If submitters do not receive an email response acknowledging receipt of their poster layout within three days of their submission, they should resend the submission.

Best New Paper on a Montreal Protocol Related Topic -- two US $250 prizes will be given away for what are judged to be the best non-technical, general audience papers published or submitted for publication between 1 January and 1 July 2007 in each of the following categories: law/governance, policy, science, and technology innovation/transfer (eight prizes in total). Nominations for the Best General Audience Paper contest are due by 15 July 2007. The papers themselves should clearly indicate the category for which they would like to be considered, and should be submitted by email to Martha Leyva of the Ozone Secretariat at OzoneInfo@unep.org. If submitters do not receive an email response acknowledging receipt of the paper within three days of their submission, they should resend the submission. Submitters should include with their submission a signed document authorizing UNEP both to host the winning papers on their website, and to reproduce the winning papers for the information of the public.

Best newspaper or magazine article -- awards for best newspaper or magazine articles written between January and July of 2007. Ten US$250 prizes will be given for what are judged to be the best news articles written between 1 January and 1 August 2007. At least one entry from each of the United Nations five recognized regions will be honored. Nominations for Best newspaper/magazine article should be submitted by 1 August 2007 to OzoneInfo@unep.org.

If submitters do not receive an email response acknowledging receipt of their submission within three days, they should resend the submission. For submissions to be considered they must be accompanied by a letter signed by the writer and, if necessary, the publishing entity, authorizing reproduction of the winning articles for the information of the public and authorizing UNEP to host the winning articles on their website.
