Friday, June 15, 2007 Pangan: Distortion By Benjie R. Pangan At Close Range
THE present administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo or her eager-beaver advisers should stop tinkering with historical dates deeply ingrained in the minds and consciousness of nationalistic Filipinos.
The so-called holiday economics of President Arroyo should not distort important holidays like June 12, known throughout the years since her father, President Diosdado Pangan Macapagal declared it as the date of our true independence and not July 4, 1946, as was observed and tolerated by his predecessors.
Anyway, the much ballyhooed holiday economics has no impact on the poor daily wage earners, rather, it poses long, dry and sustained hours of hunger for most of us, as offices must be closed in observance of the Palace-dictated holidays.
And to the indolent (read: lazy) Filipino, the extended vacation only makes him more dependent on leisure time, rather than spend this gap on something more productive and beneficial.
As it is, we are only industrious in bed and not on anything else constructive to prop up dramatically and drastically our volatile and tentative economy!
Green and go. After the waste treatment approaches, waste market fairs, particularly that at SM City Clark, SM Supermarket spearheads its environmental program aptly named SM Cares or Concerned and Responsible Eco-Shoppers.
In partnership with Unilever Philippines, a leading manufacturer of food, home and personal care products, SM introduces to the public the GreenBag, a kind of reusable shopping bag that can last for almost two years and probably longer.
GreenBag will phase out the usual plastic bags in due time. More projects in the offing, Engr. Bien?
Greening Mabalacat. Engr. Rox Peña is at the forefront of a laudable project, in tandem with equally environmentally conscious and committed organizations and individuals. This time, this hardworking engineer wants to perpetuate and propagate the Balacat tree, long the symbol of this town. For this project and purpose, Engr. Rox should be encouraged and helped to ensure the success of this greening undertaking.
Defective items. What is this I heard that a big supermarket in Dau is selling defective items? Cannot the Department of Trade and Industry or the local office in the LGU of Mabalacat do something about this and investigate? I learned that one customer bought an adulterated milk product and fed the same to her young child. What if the latter suffers poisoning? I will write more about this in the coming issues.
Giving credit where it is due. As early as Jan. 5, 2007, Adoracion M. Castro, Sanitation Inspector I, Municipal Health Office, Rural Health Unit III, Mabalacat, has replied to the instructions of Dr. Freddie C. Anunciacion, Rural Health Physician, Rural Health Unit II, Dau and gave her findings on and observations of her ocular inspection on the liquid waste ever present at Ubas Street, Dau Homesite.
Like one doing in earnest her work, Mrs. Castro did do something on the problem and is, well, doing some more to address the ever intriguing problem of Ubas Street. I doff my hat to you, Mrs. Castro.
