CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- SM Supermalls, together with the Department of Education, celebrated the White Cane Safety Day at SM Mall of Asia recently.
Pursuant to Republic Act (RA) 6759 declaring August 1 as the White Cane Safety Day in the Philippines, the blind community gathered together to promote awareness about the special needs of people with visual impairment.
Activities such as basic Braille reading, chess for the blind, and free eye check-up were held and they benefited people with visual impairments.
A mall walkthrough was afterwards held to show how friendly SM Mall of Asia is to people with disabilities (PWDs).
SM Mall of Asia has been awarded the "Most Disabled Friendly Mall Award for 2007" during the recently held celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.
SM Supermalls also received numerous international citations for spearheading efforts in providing a "barrier-free" environment for PWDs, including the commendations from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and Asia Pacific Development Center for Disability (APCD).
SM malls have improved facilities for PWDs such as ramps, lifts, elevators, priority lanes, comfort rooms and parking slots. Aside from upgrading mall infrastructures, SM has also taken on the bigger challenge of educating their people to serve their special customers better through various seminars being conducted at every SM mall.
