Monday, October 29, 2007 Egg shortage in Pampanga's 'egg basket' By Raymond C. Garcia
MINALIN -- Local folk are asking poultry raisers here to give "a little priority" to their cabalens in terms of egg distribution as there are more eggs to buy in other parts of Pampanga than in this town known as "the egg basket of Pampanga."
Several folk, mostly vendors, here have told Sun.Star that poultry raisers seem to prioritize the distributors of eggs in other areas. They said they have been experiencing shortage in their stocks of eggs.
"Although Minalin is considered as the egg basket of Pampanga, we are still experiencing shortage of egg stocks," Rolando Yabut, president of Minalin Public Market Association.
Yabut also said the problem seems to have nothing to do with the daily production of eggs by poultry raisers, since according to their survey, the town is producing millions of eggs daily.
He theorized that poultry raisers have been bringing their products to other places, especially in Manila, where they can be sold at a much higher price and to earn more profit.
Lucia Fernandez, an egg and vegetable vendor in the public market here, said there is really a shortage of eggs in the market.
Yabut said they are planning to request for a dialogue with the Minalin Municipal Government to clarify things and settle relevant issues with poultry raisers.
Sun.Star tried but failed to get comments from poultry raisers in this town.
