Impeach raps v. Arroyo won’t prosper: lawmaker
By Raymond C. Garcia

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The new impeachment move against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will not prosper, according to Pampanga third district Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr.

Gonzales, a member of the President’s Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) party, said Arroyo’s support in the House of Representatives remains solid and dominant despite new issues raised against her administration.

“In fact, my sense is that the lawmakers’ support for the President is even stronger now for many reasons, among them the country’s economic gains and the greater political stability,” he said.

Gonzales also said he joins, in principle, the call for unity and peace made by various sectors in Pampanga for President Arroyo.

“It’s a relevant and timely call, and for Kapampangans I believe it’s the least we can do to show our support and solidarity with the President,” said the congressman.

Gonzales said all Kapampangans must rally behind Arroyo against those who have been unrelenting in their effort to unseat the President despite her unprecedented accomplishments in stabilizing the country’s economy and political atmosphere.

“I hope that others will follow our kabalens’ show of unity and support for the President to further galvanize her reconciliation and recovery programs and vision for a prosperous and peaceful country,” he said.

According to him, the impeachment case against President Arroyo will not succeed because those who push for it do not have the numbers.

“It’s still a numbers game being a political act and the people behind this new move against the President don’t have the numbers to make it happen now,” he said.

Gonzales, vice chairman of the House committee on public works, joined the President’s trip to the United Nations and in her meetings with various groups in the United States, including American investors and Filipino communities.

“Abroad, the President enjoys huge respect and admiration for the way she has led the country to a new era of hope and opportunities for growth, progress and peace,” he said.

“Any move against her such as the impeachment will be a great disservice to this image and prestige,” he added.
