Tuesday, January 22, 2008 Bird fanatics visit Candaba's nests
CANDABA -- The Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP), led by the group's president Michael Lu, recently landed on the nests of migratory birds in this municipality.
Lu said this is not the group's first time in this town, saying they usually go to the Mayor's house here and in Barangay Paralaya two years ago.
"As far as I can remember, we went here in Barangay Paralaya two years ago, that was right after the flood and the birds really flocked the area during that time," he said.
The club is composed of businessmen, educators, students, doctors, artists, lawyers, and writers, among others.
They were brought together by one thing -- the beauty of Philippine wild birds in their natural habitats.
Founded by a handful of weekend bird watching enthusiasts, the club was established in July 2004 to promote bird watching as a hobby and the responsible enjoyment of nature and to build records of bird observations that will be open for public access.
To date, about 300 people have been members of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines.
"Our mission is to provide a forum for individuals to share their interest in watching wild birds in the Philippines and to provide support and records to other groups with similar interest," Lu said.
The visit, according to Lu, is also a way of exploring other places where migratory birds including the "resident" ones flock as if having one big feast celebration.
"We saw a good number of birds here in Candaba. It is actually more than what we expected," said Lu.
He also said the place is suitable for field and educational trips for students as well as for adults.
In the end, Lu lauded local government officials here saying the "local chief executive here is very much pro environment". (RCG)
