Customs Clark awards top taxpayers
By Reynaldo G. Navales

CLARK FREEPORT -- The Bureau of Customs (BOC) here has awarded the top firms inside the Freeport and other economic zone in Central Luzon in terms of tax payments for 2007.

Among the locators awarded during Monday's ceremony at the BOC Clark office were PTT Philippines Trading Corporation, United Parcel Service (UPS), Trust International Paper Corporation (Tipco), Yokohoma Tires Philippines Incorporated, Asia Pacific and China (API), Clark Air Support Service Corporation, Philco Silicate, International Wiring Service Incorporated, KEC-Astron Philippines, Teco, and Lubwell Corporation.

Last year, the BOC has collected P254,938,882 from PTT, P230,935,548 from UPS, P18,971,742 from Tipco, P8,902,332 from Yokohama, and P8,452,993.870 from API.

Lawyer Ronnie Silvestre, BOC Clark district collector, admitted that the agency's target tax collection of P750 million last year was not realized.
However, he disclosed that their 2007 collection was still high as it reached P628,754,148.26.

The figure, he said, is much higher than the agency's 2006 collection amounting to more than P585 million.

Silvestre expressed gratitude to the locators inside the Freeport and other economic zones in the region, which, he said, has contributed a lot to the BOC's collection effort.

"Without (the locators), we will not be able to meet our target in terms of collection," Silvestre said.

He also made an assurance that the agency will continue to render services to the Peza locators.

"Our vision for 2008 is to be among the best customs administration in the world for every Filipino to be proud of. (The year) 2008 will be a better year for us," Silvestre said.

For his part, Customs Deputy Commissioner Celso Templo said the agency is working hard to minimize smuggling and at the same time professionalize the bureau's rank and file.

"We will be more responsive to the needs of stakeholders and we will try our best to make all transactions of the BOC transparent," Templo stressed.

The BOC Clark also awarded its employee of the year -- Rommel Isip, BOC Clark administrative division chief -- who was selected among the 100 employees of the agency.

"This is the first time that we award a model employee," Silvestre said.

Isip garnered the most number of votes from the BOC Clark employees.
