Thursday, February 21, 2008 Speakout: Clarification on Pelco 2 management's issue
THIS is in reaction to the statements of Ms. Catalina Saplala, Chairperson of CAP 2, regarding my letter to this paper on the appointment of an "insider" as Pelco 2 General Manager.
First, let me establish the fact that I do not speak for anyone when I say my piece on issues. Thus, in my letter to this paper, I never said, implied or insinuated that I do otherwise.
I do not know Mrs. Saplala personally. Neither am I an officer nor a member of CAP 2.
I only know that the group concerns itself with consumers' rights. I, therefore, cannot speak for both. I do not intend to.
My opinions are based on my personal perspective of the issue as a citizen and as a consumer.
In a democratic society, freedom to express one's mind, in any form, is a right. Thus, it is our right, and sometimes our duty, to express our views on issues directly or indirectly affecting us.
I said in my letter: "CAP 2 raised no objection or protest to the appointment of Mr. Bong Guevarra as Pelco 2 general manager, and that "this could perhaps suggest the concurrence of the group with the Pelco 2 board."
Honestly, I was under the presumption that CAP 2, being the vigilant advocate of Consumers' Concerns that it is, had to know about it before I did.
Thus, I presumed that since no statement of protest is voiced out, it "could perhaps suggest concurrence."
I did not establish a fact. I merely speculated one. Unfortunately, and much to my disappointment, my presumptions were, however, wrong.
I, therefore, wish to rectify my conclusions. As to CAP 2 stand, that is. As a consumer, however, I remain supportive of the BOD's appointment of an "insider" as Pelco 2's officer in charge.
I must admit though, that with all the high esteem I have for CAP 2 with its vigilance, I find it rather ironic for it not to have known about the issue and make a stand, and timely at that, when such occurred days before my letter came out.
I do not wish to earn the ire of anyone with my opinions.
My intentions are only to express and impart my views on issues as a concerned citizen and consumer. And being concerned requires deed, even in its smallest measurement. The grandest of intentions rank nowhere near that.
I chose to write. It's a small way to remind the readers not to be oblivious to what is happening and make our very existence meaningful.
But in so doing, others may view our efforts differently. But of course, that is their view. Much like yours and mine, only it is different.
