Capitol asked to allow desilting of Minalin river

THE Minalin Municipal Council has approved Resolution No. 2007- 53, requesting the Provincial Government to allow a river here to be desilted.

This, according to Vice Mayor Edgardo Yambao, is in preparation for the coming rainy season since the town is one of the greatly flood affected areas in Pampanga's fourth district.

"The San Francisco River has not been fully restored to its typical designed bottom width of water way of 20 meters," Yambao said.

The vice mayor also said a wide portion of the river is still silted with lahar that may cause flooding in the residential areas of San Francisco area and nearby barangays.

"The silted state hampers the free flow of water and poses threat to the lives and livelihood of the people in the area," Yambao said.

The resolution states that the Municipal Government is praying for the complete desilting of the river primarily for the safety of the public and for the municipality's eco-tourism program that aims to develop and eventually restore the beauty and grandeur of the river.

According to the resolution, the lahar or sand materials that will be hauled will be used for the improvement of the San Francisco-Sta. Catalina tail dike, as well as for upgrading schools and different projects in the area.

"We plan to conduct the desilting of the San Francisco River this summer since we find it as the best appropriate time for this kind of activity," said Yambao reiterating that the activity is for the benefit of their constituents and not for any other reason. (RCG)
