Mabalacat, Angeles mark Earth Day

THE local governments of Mabalacat and Angeles City have observed the Earth Day with several cleanliness and awareness campaign on environment.

Mabalacat Mayor Marino Morales led the town-wide cleanliness drive including the clearing of the Sapang Balen creek from garbage and other debris.

He cited the importance of cooperation to the worldwide campaign to resolve global warming.

In Angeles City, Mayor Francis Nepomuceno through the Angeles City Tourism Office initiated a citywide environmental awareness program with the theme "Do Your Part to Save the Earth."

The highlight of the city's Earth Day celebration is an Eco-Party dubbed "Kamalayan sa Kalikasan" which will be held on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Riverside (Pandan).

City Tourism Officer Pamela Angelie Flores said the objective of the Eco-Party is to heighten awareness of the people on the importance of nurturing the nature.

Began on April 22, 1970 in the US to preserve the planet, Earth Day has been commemorated since and it has become the world's greatest civil celebration and the symbol of the environmental movement.

Nepomuceno has encouraged all Angelenos to support the City Government's programs environmental protection and preservation.

A free concert, featuring local bands, will also highlight the celebration. The event will be sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, ComClark, Smart Telecommunications and Globe Telecoms.

Free forest trees and fertilizers will also be given away by the City Agriculture Office and the Environmental Management System Office.

Other activities include citywide information drive on energy conservation, practical tips on every household especially proper garbage disposal. (RGN)
