Wednesday, May 21, 2008 Angeleno is Asian Power lifter champion
ANGELES CITY -- A homegrown Angeleño snatched four gold medals at the 2008 Asian Powerlifting Championships held at the Tashkent, Uzbekistan on May 1 to 7.
Merlina Medina, 39, of Barangay Malabañas here, was among the 12 Filipino power lifters who competed in the event organized by the Asian Powerlifting Federation. She competed in the squat, bench press and dead lift of 52 kg category, women division, together with 250 power lifters from 19 countries.
Mayor Francis Nepomuceno proudly welcomed Medina, when Medina visited the mayor's office. "The City Government is proud of what you have accomplished; you brought glory to our city and you gave encouragement to uplift the performances level of our athletes to the international standard".
Ryan Paul Puri, head of City Sport Office, said the City Government is very supportive with athletes taking part in the national and international competitions by way of cash incentives and free training expenses to make them competitive.
The City Sports Office determined to be self-reliant, produced highly trained and globally competitive athletes that would bring pride and honor to the city.
Just recently, the Angeles City Government through the Angeles City Sports Office (Acso) and Local School Board provided cash incentives and Medal of Excellence in sports to Ten Outstanding athletes who won medals at the recently held 2008 Palarong Pambansa in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Puri added.
About 32 selected athletes from Angeles City represented the Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) ranked fifth place in both the secondary and elementary division. (RGN)
