Man, woman die in motorcycle mishap

GUAGUA -- A man and a woman on board a motorcycle died in a recent vehicular mishap along a busy intersection in Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Jasa) here, police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Marcelo Dayag, chief of police, identified the victims as Eduardo Vargas, 23, of Morning Sun Village, San Roque Dau 2nd, Lubao and Melody Pineda, 24, of San Nicholas also in Lubao town.

Vargas was driving the motorcycle while Pineda was riding at the back.

Police reports revealed that the victims were heading towards Lubao town along the Guagua-Jasa section in Barangay San Antonio onboard a Honda XRM motorcycle with license plate number UH-1714 when a Mazda pickup with license plate number APS 555, coming from the right side of the road, rammed at the motorcycle.

The victims were thrown from the motorcycle and sustained serious wounds and injuries on different parts of their bodies.

Both the motorcycle and the pickup were badly damaged due to the impact.

The victims were brought to the Pampanga Medical Specialist Hospital where Vargas was pronounced dead on arrival by attending physicians. Pineda died while being treated.

Their remains were later brought to Velasquez Funeral Homes in this town.

Police operatives, meanwhile, apprehended the driver of the pickup identified as Renan David, 25, Cabalantian in Bacolor town.

The suspect, who is currently in the custody of the municipal police, is facing reckless imprudence resulting to double homicide and damage to property.

Dayag has advised motorists, especially motorcycle riders, to wear helmets and other protective gear when on the road.

He said most fatal injuries and accidents related to motorcycles could be averted if proper speed and road safety rules are observed.

He also said motorcycle riders should avoid having "back riders" to be able to concentrate on driving that would result in lesser road accidents. (IOF)
