CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Over 2,000 representatives from the academic community, non-government organizations (NGOs), civil society groups, and ordinary citizens gathered Saturday at the Capitol grounds for the first ever "Congress on Good Governance."
The congress aimed to provide valuable insights on "responsible and accountable" citizenship. Particular emphasis was also given to the advocacy for good governance and the role of all sectors in governmental participation.
The event featured lectures and talks by guest facilitators.
The lectures were given by Professor Angelito Manalili and Conrado Navarro of the Philippine Rural Reconstructive Movement (PRRM).
Manalili discussed the importance of bringing the government closer to the people. He said governance should involve "ordinary people and place authority on ordinary citizens."
Manalili said governance should likewise be associated with that of the ministry of Christ on earth.
Navarro, on the other hand, discussed the role of ordinary citizens in governance and responsible citizenship. He said what is hailed as a "miracle" in the last gubernatorial race in Pampanga should not be credited to Pampanga Governor Eddie Panlilio.
"The miracle is more of the Kapampangans who wanted a change in government. This is what happens when the people take it in their hands to change the course of their life in government," Navarro said.
Panlilio, for his part, reported the accomplishments of his administration's first year in office.
Also attending the congress were civil society group from various municipalities, Kapampangan Marangal Incorporated, Sapang Uwak Aeta Community, and representatives of different schools.
Organizers said they are advocating for good governance, which is the main "battle cry" of the Panlilio administration. (IOF)
