Ex-mayor's killing condemned
By Chris Navarro

APALIT -- The Pampanga Mayors League (PML) on Friday condemned the killing of former Apalit mayor Tirso "Pogi" Lacanilao.

PML spokesman and Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo also said they would assist the victim's family.

Pelayo thanked Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Avelino Razon Jr. and Police Regional Director Errol Pan for creating a task force that will go after the killers of Lacanilao.

He said it is still early to speculate about the motive behind Lacanilao's killing, but he urged investigators to work for the immediate identification of the victim's assailants.

For his part, San Simon Mayor Rodrigo Canlas said the mayors all over the province mourned the Lacanilao's demise. "We extend our condolences to the relatives of Mayor Lacanilao," he said.

"Mayor Pogi (Lacanilao) is a good friend. We mourn his death. We are praying for the repose of his soul," Canlas said.

On Thursday afternoon, Lacanilao was shot dead by motorcycle-riding men in Barangay Poblacion in Calumpit, Bulacan. He succumbed to several gunshot wounds.

The victim was inside his Mitsubishi Gallant car (UHA-169) parked in front of a gasoline station along McArthur Highway when the killers shot him.

The victim's security aide, identified as Arman del Moran, was spared from the attack.

Lacanilao was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the attending physicians declared him dead on arrival.

His remains lies at the St. Louie Funeral Homes in Apalit, Pampanga.

Last year, Lacanilao's son was also killed in Calumpit.
