Thursday, August 21, 2008 Aquino supporters bewail removal of streamers
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Supporters of former Pampanga congressman Reynaldo Aquino have bewailed the removal of several congratulatory streamers placed in various point in this city following his appointment as the new president of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth).
"It's a petty and pathetic act and something that could only be done by people with selfish motive," a former barangay leader here, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal, said.
Asked if they had any suspect in mind, the source said the act could have only been ordered or authorized by people in power who are unhappy with Aquino's appointment.
"These people will stop at nothing to blot Aquino out of the people's mind just to keep themselves in power," the source said.
Aquino, who is also a three-term mayor of this city, was named to the Philhealth top post by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last week, more than a year after Aquino lost his bid to regain the city mayoralty in May last year.
An Arroyo stalwart, Aquino failed to regain the mayoral seat from incumbent Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, a political ally in previous elections.
