Friday, September 05, 2008 Oca: I have no plans to run for governor By Jovi T. De Leon and Ian Ocampo Flora
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- "I am honored, but I have no plans to run for governor of Pampanga in the 2010 elections."
This was the instant reaction of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez of this city when asked about his views regarding the intention of Pampanga Governor Eddie Panlilio to endorse him as candidate for the province's gubernatorial post.
Sun.Star Pampanga reported on Thursday Panlilio's statements about his choice of Rodriguez for governor, where the priest-turned-governor was quoted as saying: "I think Mayor Rodriguez is my candidate for governor if ever I may be recalled by my political detractors or come the 2010 elections."
Panlilio added that his choice of Rodriguez is anchored on the mayor's "political maturity" and good governance of the capital city and its constituents.
The city mayor said on Thursday morning that he is honored by Panlilio's intentions, but he really has not set his sights on the position. "It's an honor for me that he (Panlilio) mentioned my name. But I don't have a plan," said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez meanwhile said he has been praying and hoping that all would soon be well at the Capitol.
Asked about his position on the recall move against Panlilio, Rodriguez said he is saddened by such a situation because "it would do no good for the province."
"It's a waste of time," he said. "And I really do hope they could immediately resolve their issues for the good of the province."
On Panlilio's claim that he is his adviser, Rodriguez said: "I am honored that he considers me his adviser. We talk sometimes but I never considered that as an indication that I am his adviser, but most probably because we are co-public servants. Still, I am deeply honored."
The mayor said he remains focused on realizing this city's vision and mission to become a global gateway and a habitat for human excellence come 2015.
Very recently, this city has been cited as one the best in the country in terms of good governance and investment.
The Institute for Solidarity in Asia said the City of San Fernando has been elevated another notch higher to the third level because of excellent governance and creative a very conducive climate for investment through the combined efforts of multi-sectoral coalitions, business groups and city officials.
Rodriguez said he still plans on concentrating his efforts and political plans on this capital city.
While some political quarters believe Rodriguez is "ripe" for the gubernatorial post, he said he is more content with his mayoralty post.
On Wednesday, Panlilio said he will endorse this Mayor Rodriguez as his candidate for governor whether the recall petition against him will prosper or not.
"I am considering to return to the church or to run for higher government position so that I can help Mang Oca (Rodriguez) in running for governor," he said.
But Rodriguez said he would only consider such if he would be directed by his political party (Lakas-CMD) or the President to run for governor.
"I don't want to involve myself in the gubernatorial issue," he said, adding that he has more plans and concerns in the city than to devote time on provincial concerns.
