Friday, September 05, 2008 Speak Out: Positive effects of the eight-week curriculum
TWO weeks before the opening of classes, a School Readiness Assessment (SREA) was administered to grade one entrants as well as an interview to their respective parents and guardians for the purpose of classifying whether they are ready or not ready for the grade one work.
The pupils who were found not ready were required to undergo the so called 8-Week Curriculum, which has been purposely formulated to help develop the social, motor and other readiness skills of young learners.
It consists of skills/objectives and developmentally appropriate activities mostly made up of songs, games, stories, movement and other play activities.
A month ago, the 8-Week Curriculum reached its end of implementation. For eight consecutive weeks the concepts of different activities were enforced for those who were found not ready, just to prepare them for the grade one work.
The recently held post assessment for the 8-Week Curriculum brought positive effects because majority of the pupils who had undergone this program, have been found ready for the grade one work, a positive sign of producing zero non-readers and zero non-numerates at the end of the school year.
