Monday, September 22, 2008 City hall employees hold 'Ocalympics'
WEARING colors of red, yellow, violet, and white, City of San Fernando employees gathered in a whole-day sporting event at the Heroes Hall last Friday for this year's Ocalympics.
The event brought together around 300 participants from the City's Government employees, city police, and the education department. It was held in time for Mayor Oscar Rodriguez's 63rd birthday and is marked by music, sports, and pageantry.
The program kicked off with the ceremonial torch relay initiated by Rodriguez who was flanked by department heads led by City Administrator Ferdinand Caylao.
The torch, which represented the "spirit of sportsmanship," snaked along the San Fernando's historical district coursing through Consunji Street all the way to the Heroes Hall.
For the first time during the celebration, a cheer dance competition was held between competing teams as main highlight of the celebration.
Employees had fun competing in various ball games and native games.
"This is a time for us to be able to relax and meet other employees. This event also promotes camaraderie and becomes and yearly activity that city hall workers anticipate," Caylao said.
Programs by public elementary schools in this capital city were also staged in front of the city hall, while a thanksgiving mass for Rodriguez's birthday was attended by government officials and well-wishers at the Plaza Vidal de Arrozal Atrium.
Meanwhile, City Hall officials wished Rodriguez good health and fiscal accomplishments for the city.
"We hope he has a long life and good to realize his dreams for the city," Vice Mayor Edwin Santiago said. (IOF)
