Mayor forms body for contaminated milk
By Reynaldo G. Navales

ANGELES City Mayor Francis Nepomuceno has created a task force which will monitor the entry of contaminated milk products to the city.

This in adherence to the advisory issued by the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Task Force Anti-Contaminated Milk Products will consist of the City Health Office, Business Establishment Monitoring, Regulatory and Compliance Office (Besmorco), Angeles City Police Office (Acpo), Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLD), and other departments.

Nepomuceno has instructed the task force and the City Health Office to inspect all stores selling unbranded powdered milk coming from China.

H also directed the body to recall and seize the products to protect Angelenos especially the children.

The DTI and BFAD on Tuesday directed all licensed importers and distributors of milk products from China to immediately stop from further selling their products.

The temporary ban stands until "data are presented assuring the products' safety and fitness for human consumption."

In China, a number of children and over 6,000 got sick after drinking infant-formula brand contaminated with melamine, which can caused kidney failure.

Melamine is commonly used in lamination, wood adhesives, fabric coatings, ceiling tiles and flame retardants. Some Chinese dairy plants have added it to milk products to make it seem to have a higher protein level.

Nepomuceno said poor people will be affected because these milk products from China are sold at a cheaper price. "The only way protect our people is to stop selling the products.”

City Nutrition Officer Arnel Calaguas assured the public that the milk being used for their feeding program is safe and do not have melamine contents.

He added that his office is taking all precautions for the health and safety of the people.

The City Nutrition Office presently feeds 166 pre-school children in various schools in the city.
