CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Amid calls here for him to choose between basketball and politics, Vice Governor Yeng Guiao recently earned the much coveted opportunity to lead the country's PBA-backed national squad fighting to regain its glory in international basketball competitions with his appointment as head coach and mentor.
Guiao is currently the head coach of the PBA multi-titlist Red Bull Barakos.
With this appointment, Guiao joins the band of few selected PBA coaches assigned the gargantuan task to propel back to its "glory days" the country's basketball five and regain its top position in international caging.
Guiao said he is setting his sight among Asia's top three, at the least. He said he plans to tap and include in the national line-up naturalized players in the RP squad in a bid to form a taller and faster team that would be at par with other international competitors.
Guiao's appointment comes at the peak of local political controversies here where his detractors have repeatedly asked him to make a choice between "coaching" or "running the capitol's affairs as vice-governor and presiding officer of the Provincial Board."
