Wednesday, October 08, 2008 PB hails Guiao's appointment as RP team's head coach
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Provincial Board (PB) has passed a resolution congratulating its presiding officer, Vice Governor Joseller "Yeng" Guaio, for being appointed as head coach of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)-backed Philippine Team.
On Monday's regular session presided by First District Board Member Crisostomo Garbo, ex-officio Board Member and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation President John Eric Tumang, moved for the passage of the resolution which was approved unanimously by the PB members.
Guiao will lead the Philippine Basketball Team in the forthcoming 2009 Fiba (International Basketball Federation)-Asia Championships, the qualifying tournament for the 2010 World Basketball Tournament.
"The recent appointment of the Honorable Vice Governor Yeng Guaio as head coach is not only welcome news but a reaffirmation on his capability and leadership as a basketball coach," Tumang said.
He added that, notwithstanding his tight schedules and pressing commitments, Guiao has never neglected his sworn duties as an elected official.
Tamang said Guiao's colorful stint in the basketball scene started when Concepcion Industries engaged his services as coach of its basketball team. Under his leadership, the neophyte tactician guided the RFM Swift Mighty Meaties in two PBA Championships.
"Coach Yeng" later served as Commissioner of the Philippine Basketball League and as members of the Board of Directors of Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines.
In subsequent years, he led the Red Bull Barakos to the championship in its maiden year in the PBA and thereafter winning another two championships for the same basketball team.
In 2001, Guiao became a board member in the province of Pampanga to start off his political career. In 2004, he won the vice gubernatorial position and was re-elected in 2007 for the same position which he currently serves. Guiao is the son of former Pampanga Governor, the late Bren Guiao. He was an alumnus of La Salle Green Hills and studied at the University of the Philippines before entering the coaching ranks in the 1980s.
In his short speech before the PB, Guiao assured that he would not set aside his duties as vice governor.
"I will still perform my duties as vice governor to the best of my ability and rest assured that its still work for me here at the PB," Guaio added. (IOF)
