City Council honors former vice mayor

ANGELES CITY -- As a way of remembering the contribution of its past legislators and government leaders, the City Council here has honored former councilors and mayors -- foremost among them, the longest Vice-Mayor to serve this highly urbanized city.

Former Vice Mayor and City Councilor Alberto Pamintuan was honored during the Angeles City Legislators Reunion held at the Casino Filipino here and attended by local leaders last Friday.

Incumbent Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting said the activity aims to recognize and bring in to the local consciousness the contributions of former city officials during their respective terms.

"Some of our former officials lament that they are not even remembered despite the fact that they have served this city in the past years. This activity aims to bring back the honor and respect that is due to them," Cabigting said.

"Among this throng of officials that Angeles City had was Vice Mayor Pamintuan which we dearly remember and adore," Cabigting stressed.

Alberto Pamintuan, on the prime of his life, was councilor from 1960 to 1968 and later served as vice mayor from 1968 to 1986. He was considered to have been a potent figure and the "guiding light" during the most turbulent years of the city. Pamintuan also served as a village captain before becoming a councilor.

He is the father of Subic-Clark Alliance for Development Chairman and Secretary Edgardo Pamintuan.

Secretary Pamintuan spoke in behalf of the Pamintuan family for the honor accorded to their father. "For the longest time, this is the first-ever award that my father received as a public official and for that we are grateful for the people who organized this event," Pamintuan said.

Also discussed during the event was the planned Legislative Building for the City Council, book on Angeles City Local Leaders and a possible scholarship of dependents of former legislators in the city.

Also present in the event were former Vice Mayor Albeto Suller, former councilor and one-day City Mayor Maximo Sangil, former Vice Mayor Ricardo Zalamea, and former Councilor Alex Cauguiran, to name a few.

Sangil reminded those present during the event of the fleeting nature of government service and life itself.

"All the things we do and we have now is only transitory, what is more important is the love of the people serve and how history will judge us for the things that we have done during our term," Sangil said. (IOF)
