Tuesday, November 04, 2008 DPWH, LGU work to save eroded road By Chris Navarro
CANDABA -- The Department of Public Works and Highways and the local government unit (LGU) here are undertaking palliative measures to save a portion of the Sta. Ana–Candaba road in Barangay Pasig here which was recently eroded by floodwaters.
Mayor Jerry Pelayo said about 80 linear meters of the said road has been by strong water current from the Pampanga River.
He said 200 workers, mostly barangay folks of Pasig, and DPWH personnel have been undertaking round-the-clock sand bagging and sheet filling operations to save the road.
If the road would collapse, the town will be isolated from the rest of its neighboring towns.
“We are working for the past two days, 24 hours nonstop. This road should be protected at all costs because once this gives in we will be isolated from the rest of the province,” Pelayo said.
The mayor added that the LGU has already sourced out funds amounting to P3.5 million to save the endangered structure, adding that aside from sand bagging they have also put up bamboo poles to divert the flow of water which is directly hitting the un-armored portion of the road.
“We want to assure our constituents that the LGU is doing everything it can to save this road,’ Pelayo said.
Pelayo also cautioned motorists, especially those driving heavy trucks, not to pass along the said road since it might give in if heavy rains and flood waters coming from Nueva Ecija and Tarlac will pass through the Pampanga river.
