City to give tanods insurance
BARANGAY security forces or tanods in Dagupan City will be given insurance benefits starting next year when the City Council passes a resolution for such provision.
The city will also provide each barangay with one base radio and one hand-held radio to be used especially for emergency purposes.
Mayor Benjamin S. Lim said during the closing ceremony of an orientation seminar and mass oath-taking for barangay tanods on December 7 at the People's Astrodome.
"The city government will pay an insurance coverage of P60,000 in recognition of your efforts," the mayor said as he added that if a barangay tanod dies of natural death, he will receive P10,000 as benefit.
Speaking before some 490 tanods who participated in the weeklong activity, Lim said the seminar is one element to empower the barangay and improve the peace and order situation in the community. However, effective communication among barangay officials is likewise necessary.
Lim said the city is set to focus its attention to barangay development.
Two units of brand new patrol cars were given to the city police station this year while another two will be given for the next two years to monitor peace and order situation.
The city will also new firefighting equipment to the city fire station and ambulances will be bought to respond to medical emergencies.
City police chief Supt. Noli Taliņo welcomed the participants whom he called as 'force multipliers' and the city's 'first line of defense' while City Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, chairman of the SP's committee on peace and police matters, bared a plan to launch a barangay curfew hour (11 pm-4 am) so that minors can no longer roam the streets during such hours.
Department of Interior and Local Government city director Felimon Vinluan hailed the barangay officials, tanods, kagawads, treasurers, secretaries and civilian volunteers for the service they give to the community and saluted them for their cooperation and support.
The seminar was held as part of the celebration of the National Human Rights Week from December 3-10 with the them 'Karapatang Pantao, Likas sa Atin, Tungkulin Natin'.
Topics include duties and responsibilities of tanods; arrest, search and seizure; blotter and arrest techniques; intelligence; crime prevention; elements of crime and the five pillars of the criminal justice system (Sheila H. Aquino) (December 11, 2002 issue)
