American Legion holds 83rd confab in Dagupan

AT LEAST 300 visiting American and Filipino delegates will arrive in the city on April 24, 2003 to attend the 83rd Annual Convention of the American Legion, Philippine Department, to be held at the Divine Word Academy gymnasium.
Department Commander William J. Kelly will lead the four-day annual convention with the theme, "Peace and Prosperity Thru National Unity".
In a letter sent to Mayor Benjamin Lim, through City Administrator Rafael F. Baraan dated March 13, 2003, Kelly stated that among the guests of honors and speakers set to arrive to grace the convention proper include House Speaker Jose C. De Venecia, Jr., U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Francis J. Ricciardone, Defense Secretary Angelo T. Reyes and Chairman Senate Committee on National Defense Senator Ramon Magsaysay, Jr.
During the convention proper on April 26, Lim will deliver his welcome address in behalf of the people of Dagupan, while Secretary Reyes and Senator Magsaysay will both deliver their addresses during the morning activities.
In the afternoon, a plenary session will take place, presided by Executive Vice Commander lawyer Miguel Gonzales. Kelly shall deliver the state of the department.
Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Larry Brownlee will preside over the elections of the new department officers, to be assisted by Comelec members Adjutant Mariano Eslao and Cmdr. Robert Bellasi. Results of the elections will be immediately announced after the elections.
Other activities included during the four-day convention are: Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Annual Detachment Convention on April 24, PVAO Seminar on Veterans Benefits and USVA Outreach Program on April 25.
On April 27, a joint session of the Philippine Department with the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion will be held.
This will be highlighted by the address of U.S. Ambassador Ricciardone.
