Duque to local officials in region: Promote volleyball

THE regional president of the Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) urged all local officials in Region I to promote volleyball by the beach.

Lawyer Gonzalo Duque made the call during the opening the other day of the Prisaa meet at the People Astrodome in Dagupan City.

"I am organizing a beach volleyball club from Laoag (City) in Ilocos Norte to Pangasinan. So soon, we will be having the volleyball games by the beach," he said.

Duque pointed out that this endeavor would not only promote the tourism industry in the region but also that the region could produce volleyball stars out of the personalities in our locality, who would be competing in national and international competitions.

He also sought the promotion of the popular classic dances, like tango, cha-cha and boogie, as part of sports.

"Let's start it in the region and, perhaps, it won't take long, it would be adopted nationally. Dance is a form of exercise," Duque said as he cited field demonstrations by students, which look like dances.

The Prisaa regional president also said in two to three years, competitions in the elementary and secondary levels would be included in the Prisaa, not just among students in the college level.

Duque, moreover, urged the participants to observe sportsmanship and camaraderie, as they are all brothers and sisters.

Commission on Higher Education (Ched) Regional Director Evelyn Pascua, who was guest of honor and speaker during the opening program, said sports is the right way to develop discipline among the students.

"We could also develop quality and excellence in the personality of students through sports," she said.

Likewise urging the participants to be united and one in spirit, Pascua said unity among the youth would bring about a strong republic as President Gloria Arroyo envisions the country to be.
