Onyok to train young boxers in Pangasinan

LINGAYEN -- Formal training for young boxers and trainers in the province will start on Saturday with no less than Olympic silver medallist Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco heading the list of the training staff.

Dubbed as " Kid Boxing with Onyok," the scientific boxing program is designed to train kids 10 to 15 years of age as well as local coaches, said Provincial Board (PB) Member Juan LI. Amor, who also serves the province's sports director.

Amor said the project falls under the Camp Victory Pangasinan launched by Gov. Victor Agbayani to provide scientific sports training program for young Pangasinan athletes with potential to become world-class athletes.

Aside from Velasco, the training staff also includes Dante de Castro, an accredited international referee of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap), John John Tamayo, Philippine Army trainer and former member of the Philippine boxing team, and other trainers from Abap and the Philippine Sports Commission.

The course consists of lectures on amateur boxing, the philosophy of mental and physical development, exercise and techniques on the art of boxing.

After the end of the training program, the participants are expected to know the rudiments of amateur boxing such as the eight different decisions in amateur boxing, diet and food supplements, scoring and no scoring hits and scoring area, types of fouls, Aiba officiating rules, and the fundamental alignments and required gloves.

"Our goal is to move Pangasinan into the frontline of the boxing world at par with premier boxing provinces like Cebu and Davao where they have organized boxing groups actively supported by private companies," Amor said.

Sponsorship of trainees by schools, business firms, associations and civic and sports-minded individuals is encouraged, he said.

Governor Agbayani recently inaugurated the CVP boxing gym at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center here, which is now furnished with latest boxing gadgets.

Successful trainees and trainers are free to come to the boxing gym for exercises or actual training anytime, Amor said.

He said only the CVP trainees and trainers will be allowed to join CVP or Abap amateur boxing competitions in Pangasinan.

The governor has assured continuous support for the trainers who will make it to the provincial pool of boxers. PIO
