UB beats HAU, DLSU nips UST at beach volley tilt By Dino R. Zabala
THE University of Baguio (UB) beat the Holy Angel University (HAU) of Angeles City, Pampanga, in the opening games of the National Invitational Beach Volleyball Competition (women's division) held at the back of the Mayor's Shed in Tondaligan beach Monday morning.
The UB volleybelles showed their prowess against the HAU volleybelles, as they dominated several spiking points all throughout the game that led the two-player team to a 21-13 final score.
Beach volleyball is played consisting of only two players per team, unlike the normal indoor volleyball games that is played consisting of six players per team per game.
In the second game, the long-legged lady players of De La Salle University (DLSU) trounced back against the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) belles by a three-point lead, 21-18, in the end game.
Meanwhile, following the two-game women's division was the first game of the City Inter-Barangay Invitational Beach Volleyball (Men's division), which saw action between the players of Barangay Lucao versus Bonuan Gueset.
The powerful duo of Barangay Lucao team won their first game against Bonuan Gueset with a score of 21-15.
As of press time, the match between Barangay Bonuan Boquig and Barangay Pogo Chico were still in progress.
Earlier before the start of the official games, Mayor Benjamin S. Lim delivered his welcome message to the invited participating teams from the different colleges in Metro-Manila, as well as the teams representing the different barangays in the city.
He also led the ceremonial tossing of the volleyball together with former councilors Alfredo U. Quinto Sr. and Luis M. Samson Jr. Councilor Teofilo "Jojo" Guadiz III also caught up during the games.
Games scheduled for Monday are: HAU vs. UST; DLSU - UB; Bonuan Binloc - Pogo Chico; and Lucao against Bonuan Boquig.
In an interview with Sunstar, Tournament Director Manny Gatchalian said the volleyball games will all be played in the morning, instead of the scheduled morning and afternoon games.
The re-scheduling of games was due to strong winds along the beach game area during afternoons. This can hamper the volleyball during the actual competition.
He said the games might as well be extended until May 4 when the awarding of winners shall also be held.
Gatchalian also said that the officiating referees that came from Manila are bonafide members of the Philippine Volleyball Referees Federation.
Prizes at stake are: (Women's division), P15, 000 plus trophy- champion; P8,000 plus trophy - 1st runner-up; P5, 000 plus trophy - 2nd runner-up; and P3, 000 plus trophy - 3rd runner-up.
For the Men's division: P10, 000 plus trophy - champion; P5, 000 plus trophy - 1st runner-up; and P3, 000 plus trophy for the 2nd runner-up.
