Servito: Calmay Bridge, kailan kaya? By Floro Servito
SINCE 1935 after the big flood that brought havoc to the province of Pangasinan and devastated the San Alberto College alongside the Calmay bridge, so the elders say, the residents of the island barangays Calmay and Carael, continue to suffer in terms of transportation expenses.
Before the occurrence of the flood in 1972, the 2 communities were then very happy because at last, the dream of reconstructing the Calmay bridge was started and that 3 or 4 spans of the bridge beside the destroyed bridge was in full swing. The persuasion however did not materialized because the onrushing floodwaters in 1972 washed away a wide portion of land at the Calmay side and the project was discontinued. The authorities we learned in the making of the Dawel Bridge going to Barangay Bonuan Gueset, Dagupan City.
With these disgusting developments and in my sheer determination to alleviate us from our financial burden (modesty aside), this writer lost no hope, when as President of the local parish in Calmay Holy Name Society unit and the Central Pangasinan District Union (CPDU) in 1985-86, sent a telegram to the late former President Marcos expressing our sad plight. The positive reply led the city into assigning one Engr. Quinto doing the study in the engineering phase of the plan.
Former President Fidel V. Ramos in his visit to Dagupan City saw the "putot" (half destroyed) Calmay Bridge and pledge to have it reconstructed and in naming it in honor of his parent/s. again that belief never happened.
The Dawel diversion road-Pantal bridge towards De Venecia highway in barangay Tapuac now in full swing has again dampened our hopes of the construction of the Calmay Bridge.
"Pity naman kami" groan our community residents. Imagine the brunt of paying our daily transportation fares at least P20 pesos back and fourth for every passenger. The expenses there from are least estimated at several millions of pesos annually. Most affected are the employees, students, businessmen and others.
We earnestly hope that this project be given appropriate action as this will also help decongest traffic at barangay Lucao particularly at the De Venecia highway and will certainly shorten travel time to commuters west bound.
Because of these saddening eventualities, this representation took again this rare opportunity to voice out our sentiments by our long-suffering people in our respective barangays.
"Sana na naman, huwag po ninyong kalilimutan" that we deserve also to be heard and attended to as taxpayers and law abiding citizens of our beloved city.
"Puede po ba?"
"Maraming salamat po".
